NOMENCLATURE
                                                                        NOMENCLATURE OF THE SWORD

GENERAL RULES
    -Only officers, SNCO's and NCO's are authorized to carry swords.
    -Carry Sword is assumed when
        -Giving commands.
        -Changing position in formation at Quick Time.
        -Addressing or being addressed by a senior.
        -The preparatory command for Quick Time has been given.
    -While March At Quick Time
       -Any manual of arms movement has been ordered except Parade Rest, At Ease, Rest, Present Arms, or Eyes Right. 
       -When in formation with personnel to your front at normal distance or less remain at the carry except for Rest or At Ease.
       -Any facing movement has been given, if at order sword, execute carry sword on the preparatory command of the facing movement.

PRESENT SWORD IS ASSUMED WHEN

Saluting with the sword.
Unit is presented to the colors, or to persons, national anthem, retreat or hail to the chief is played.
Executing eyes right/left when you are in the interior of a formation, remain at the carry.

MARCHING AT DOUBLE TIME

Hold the sword diagonally across the chest with the true edge toward the front. Hold scabbard with left hand just below the frog.

    DRAW SWORD

    (P) TO DRAW THE SWORD FROM THE SCABBARD. (C) THREE COUNTS (W) HALTED AT ATTENTION (C) DRAW SWORD! 






    "FISRT COUNT"

  • “DRAW” – grasp scabbard with left hand just below frog tilting it forward 45 degrees.
  • Grasp the grip with right hand and pull sword out 10 inches.
  • Right forearm should be parallel to the deck.







 

    "SECOND COUNT"

  • “SWORD” – draw sword out smartly, directly to the front.
  • Right arm is fully extended and blade will be at a 45 degree angle with true edge down.
  • At the same time release the scabbard and pause in this position for a one count.






 

    THIRD COUNT

  • Bring the back of the blade against the shoulder seam.
  • Right arm nearly extended, and thumb and forefinger holding the lower part of the grip.
  • Thumb along the trouser seam with remaining fingers joined behind the hilt.
  • You are now in the position of “CARRY SWORD”.






 

ORDER SWORD FROM CARRY SWORD

(P) TO POSITION THE SWORD AT THE ORDER
(C) ONE COUNT
(W) HALTED AT CARRY SWORD
(C) ORDER SWORD (ARMS)

    EXECUTION
  • “SWORD” rotate the sword tip downward.
  • Tip should be 3 inches above the deck and right of the right foot.
  • Straighten the right arm and thumb remains on the left side of the grip and against trouser seam.

(P) TO POSITION THE SWORD AT THE CARRY
(C) ONE COUNT
(W) HALTED AT ORDER SWORD
(C) CARRY SWORD 

    EXECUTION
  • “SWORD” smartly rotate blade vertical against the shoulder seam.
  • Right arm nearly extended, and thumb and forefinger holding the lower part of the grip.
  • Thumb should be on the trouser seam with fingers joined behind the hilt.

PRESENT SWORD


(P) TO SALUTE WITH THE SWORD
(C) TWO COUNTS
(W) HALTED OR MARCHING
(C) PRESENT SWORD (ARMS)

    FIRST COUNT
  • “PRESENT” raise right hand level with and 6 inches in front of throat.
  • Wrist straight / elbow against body and knuckle bow pointing to left.
  • Blade will be inclined forward at a 30 degree angle.

FIRST COUNT/ PRESENT 

    SECOND COUNT
  • “SWORD” smartly bring blade downward, without whipping, to 3 inches above deck.
  • Tip will be slightly to the right of right foot.
  • Straighten right arm / thumb remains on left side of grip, and knuckle bow will be against trouser seam.

SECOND COUNT/ PRESENT  CARRY SWORD FROM PRESENT SWORD COMMAND “Carry, Sword”
On “Carry” turn true edge down, tip will be 3 inches off the deck.
On “Sword” bring false edge of blade to shoulder seam. Right thumb and forefinger embrace lower part of grip and remaining fingers will be joined behind the hilt.
Order Sword from Present Sword
The command is Order Sword (Arms) Executed in one count Resume the position of Order Sword

EYES RIGHT


(P) TO RENDER HONORS WITH THE SWORD
(C) TWO COUNTS
(W) WHILE MARCHING
(C) EYES RIGHT

EYES RIGHT


 

  • (RIGHT) “EYES”
  • (LEFT) UP
  • (RIGHT) “RIGHT”
  • (LEFT) DOWN/HEAD RIGHT
  • NOTE: GIVEN/COMPLETE 6 PACES FROM REVIEWING OFFICER

Execute Ready Front

  • (LEFT) “READY”
  • (RIGHT) CUT
  • (LEFT) “FRONT”
  • (RIGHT) UP/HEAD FRONT
  • NOTE: Completed when last man in unit is 6 paces past the reviewing officer

EYES RIGHT / LEFT WHILE HALTED
“EYES” execute 1st count of present sword
“RIGHT” bring sword down, with out whipping, approx 3 inches from deck
Turn your head 45 degrees left or right
ORDER SWORD WHILE HALTED
“Ready, Front” is executed in one count
“Front” turn true edge of sword down and turn head and eyes smartly to the front (simultaneously)

REST WITH THE SWORD


(P) REST IN FORMATION
(C) PARADE REST 1 (COUNT) REST AND AT EASE (NON-PRECISION)
(W) HALTED AT ATTENTION
(C) PARADE REST, AT EASE, REST

    Parade Rest
  • Can be executed from Carry Sword or Order Sword
  • Attention is preceded by a preparatory command predetermined by the size of the unit

 

    At Ease and Rest
  • The right foot, right arm, and sword remain at the position of Parade Rest
  • Command to terminate the movement is the same as the one for Parade Rest
  • On the preparatory command assume the position of Parade Rest
    RETURN TO ATTENTION AFTER RESTS
  • On Preparatory Command go to position of parade rest (Platoon..)
  • On Command of Execution “Attention” heels come together and sword is positioned 3 inches off the deck.
